Cable certifiers cripple cash flow for installers

IDEAL Networks White Paper reveals that the cost of cable certifiers is posing serious cash flow challenges for businesses installing and testing data cable. The results of extensive research interviews conducted within the cable installation and testing industry by IDEAL Networks over the past 18 months are revealed in the publication, entitled Five frustrations and challenges for data cable installers in 2017.  One of the key issues identified is that the cost of cable certifiers causes cash flow difficulties in many businesses.

“Cable certifiers are undoubtedly one of the more expensive pieces of equipment for installing or testing data cables,” says Tim Widdershoven, Global Marketing Manager for IDEAL Networks. “However, most believe they are an unavoidable capital expense and continue to buy numerous certifiers up-front, despite the impact this may have on cash flow in their business.”
As well as making cash flow challenging, the research found that purchasing numerous certifiers can occupy budget that may be better spent on other projects, or on different equipment. These cash flow difficulties can also have a knock-on effect, reducing flexibility to spend within the business as and when other needs arise.
The research also revealed that investment in equipment such as certifiers often delivers seemingly poor ROI. This was particularly true in businesses with a lower level of certifier usage where the fixed purchase cost of a certifier can prove to be an almost crippling capital expense.
Furthermore, the research discovered that different certifiers are sometimes unnecessarily purchased for working with copper and fibre cable.  This increases expenditure and further reduces the ROI of equipment while needlessly adding to the already large burden of equipment that an installer must transport to a job.
“Nowadays, up-front investment in large quantities of certifiers is just not always feasible,” explains Tim. “To better support data cable installers in future, test and measurement equipment suppliers will need to explore new ways to help businesses change their investment in certifiers from a capital expense to an operational one.”
In response to the recent research, IDEAL Networks has launched Test4Less, a new suite of solutions to help reduce capital expenditure, increase productivity and improve cashflow.  This includes a ‘Pay As You Test’, option to transform a certifier fleet from a capital investment into an operational expense.
With ’Pay As You Test’, test credits for the IDEAL Networks LanTEK III cable certifier can be purchased in batches (from 500 to 10,000 tests) and topped up as and when needed. Businesses can opt for either a free on loan certifier agreement, or to purchase the certifier with an additional initial up-front payment.  For example, it could cost just £2,750 up-front for a new cable certifier with the ‘Pay As You Test’ option.<
